Yes, when we graduate from magic school they put a variety of enchantments and spells on our bodies, from the inside so it's set in place permanently. We can change what we look like entirely if we want, it's irreversible once you do it. The magic sustains us for centuries. 800 is a bit steep but not impossible, most mages have around 400-600 years.
Yes, exactly. My elders started to look older around 400. The enchantments we have put on us stretches it out. It fundamentally changes our biology. I'd say we do get to choose, but we don't. They make it seem like this big exciting thing for us to graduate, but we're still servants of the Brotherhood, and controlled by them, used by them. You can't leave, they always pull us back in.
Or I should say they used to. A short time ago, the Brotherhood was destroyed. Most everyone I know died in a coup.
The Brotherhood had many enemies. One of our own planned the coup to wipe the group out, and he knew the people to bring in. They all had reasons.
The Brotherhood was corrupt and the way it treated the children it stole was inhumane. My youth was full of fear and manipulation. It's why I try to protect our youths here, so they can be safer. But they were still the only family I knew, so I grieve them.
[ It's not prying because it's Istredd and they have some kind of weird god-bond that's hard for him to shake.
If anything it's because he's been incredibly cagey about his background for the last 28 system years. Habits like that are hard to break. Even with those he might deem a friend. ]
it just doesn't seem like an appropriate time to tell you when you're in jail, istredd
[ There is perhaps a hint of wry amusement in his text. ]

[ It’s a lame attempt at a joke. ]
was the coupe because they realized the brotherhood was corrupt?
