Was it similar to how Yennefer positioned herself aside the queen?

[ He can't say he's particularly surprised to hear that Kyle had connections that he was unaware of. They both kept their fair share of secrets, and he knows Kyle well enough now to assume that it wasn't because he agreed with everything the monarchy did and said. ]

Not quite as close, but he had a special brooch from the King that allowed him to travel all over Thorne as a courier. It did show a certain favor, even if their relationship wasn't personal.

He wasn't close to the three who left, but I was very close with them. So I think we are involved for different reasons.

Unless it comes from the type of magic this place blocks, but it doesn't. I suppose because it's thought this magic came from the Singularity as a gift to us.

Sometimes it is definitely more of a headache than a gift. We have some very enthusiastic people. Young people, in particular, make it a little loud.

You're not that much older than them. What, a decade or so? Although a decade can be a lifetime.

it feels like i aged 800 years

is it your magic that keeps you looking young?

[magicalarchaeologist]

Yes, when we graduate from magic school they put a variety of enchantments and spells on our bodies, from the inside so it's set in place permanently. We can change what we look like entirely if we want, it's irreversible once you do it. The magic sustains us for centuries. 800 is a bit steep but not impossible, most mages have around 400-600 years.

so you aren't immortal but you age slowly?

[magicalarchaeologist]

Yes, exactly. My elders started to look older around 400. The enchantments we have put on us stretches it out. It fundamentally changes our biology. I'd say we do get to choose, but we don't. They make it seem like this big exciting thing for us to graduate, but we're still servants of the Brotherhood, and controlled by them, used by them. You can't leave, they always pull us back in.

Or I should say they used to. A short time ago, the Brotherhood was destroyed. Most everyone I know died in a coup.
